Bring your kids to learn to cook a school lunch entrée with a local chef then support the chef in serving and presenting the entrée to the participants. All kids will then vote on their favorite school lunch entrée to pick a winner to suggest to MCPS!

The festival will start with a variety of workshops in two slots (9:30-10:30 a.m. and 10:45-11:45 a.m.) for kids and parents on cooking, nutrition, mindfulness, yoga and other wellness topics. Confirmed workshops so far are: 


Real Food Festival9:30-10:30 a.m.
-Cooking Teams with Local Chefs (for kids 10-18)

-Plant Sciences and Raw Foods with Hira Chowdhary (ages 4-11; under 5 must have parent with them)
-Basic Yoga and Meditiation for Adults (ages 16 and up) with Lauren Schultz
-Back to the Basics Eating a Whole Foods Diet with Melissa Brescia (for teens and adults)
-Raising Healthy Eaters: How to Win the Mealtime War with Jessica Braider (for adults)
-Fruit Salad Making for Kids with Dawson's Market (ages 4–11; under 5 must have parent with them)

10:45-11:45 a.m.
-How to Eat on the Go, But Still Eat Healthy with Risa Elias (ages teen - adult)
-Plant Sciences and Raw Foods with Hira Chowdhary (ages 12-16)
-Heart Warriors Yoga with Beatrice Spadacini (ages 5-10)
-Find Out Which Foods are Whoa, Slow and Go with Common Threads (ages 3-2nd grade; must be potty trained)
-Cook it and Try it: Quinoa Salad with Gioconda Padovan (ages 8-12)

-Stakeholders Forum on School Food (teen-adult)

The main room will feature tables from local wellness organizations and restaurants with samples of their healthy food options as well as a small silent auction (see items available for pre-bids here: http://www.realfoodforkidsmontgomery.org/events.php).

Kids who team up with local chefs will be given a cooking lesson Real Food Festivalon preparing a school lunch entrée during the first workshop slot and can pick another workshop for the second time slot. At noon, the teams will present their entrées and offer samples to all participants, then all the students will vote on their favorite chef/student entrée and select a winner from the teams.

All funds will go towards supporting Real Food for Kids – Montgomery’s work of bringing real, whole, local, sustainable and nutrient-rich foods to children in MCPS. Our organization’s top four advocacy priorities to improve the health of Montgomery County’s children are: 
  • Putting best practices salad bars in all MCPS schools;
  • Moving from serving processed, reheated food to food cooked from scratch either in the MCPS central facility or in school kitchens where available;
  • Reducing sugar in school foods; and
  • Removing junk food marketing from schools.
